Health Minister, Cameron Friesen announced a new $5 million COVID-19 research fund through Research Manitoba. The new fund will subsidize a clinical trial to determine if a commonly used drug can safely be used as a treatment for COVID-19, and will support local researchers in developing solutions to health-care issues in response to the virus.
Premier Brian Pallister announced large public gatherings, and Manitoba 150 celebrations are being paused for 2020 due to public health concerns. For organizations under the province’s ‘Community Festivals and Events’ program that must cancel their events this year due to COVID-19, the province is committed to covering up to 50 percent of eligible funding. The premier is also recalling the Manitoba Legislative Assembly for an emergency session next Wednesday April 15 to pass legislation related to COVID-19.
