Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a $9 billion relief package for post-secondary students. The new Canada Emergency Student Benefit is expected to provide students with $1,250 per month from May to August. Funding will increase to $1,750 for students living with a disability or providing care for someone else. For graduate students and student researchers, the government has committed over $291million to extend scholarships, fellowships and grants. In addition, the government committed to provide $75 million to increase supports specifically for Inuit, Métis and First Nations students.
Trudeau also announced the Canada Student Service Grant that will provide student volunteers between $1,000 and $5,000, contingent on their hours of service.
The government has also committed to creating 76,000 jobs for young people, in addition to the Canada Summer Jobs Program. The placements are expected to be in sectors that require additional support, or that are on the frontlines of the COVID-19 pandemic.
