The House of Commons reconvened to pass Bill C-14: A Second Act Respecting Certain Measures in Response to COVID-19. The Bill passed the Senate and has received Royal Assent from Governor General Julie Payette.
Bill C-14 amends the Income Tax Act to introduce an emergency wage subsidy, which will last until September 30, 2020. The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy program was created to prevent further job losses and encourage employers to re-hire workers previously laid off as a result of COVID-19. The wage subsidy program will provide a 75-per-cent wage subsidy to eligible employees for up to 12 weeks, retroactive to March 15, 2020. Finance Minister Bill Morneau stated that companies can expect to receive funds two to four weeks after applying through the Canada Revenue Agency.
